One Month!

Holy Cow! I can't believe my little boy is one month old! Time really does go by very fast! I am, as usual, late posting because he actually turned one month on Monday the 21. He is doing really well and has been only on his oxygen at night since last Thursday! Yea! His home health nurse came on Monday to weigh him and he weighed 7lb 12oz! Anyways here are some pictures of our big boy!

Sunday after church, we were going to go to Sacrament but we were a little late and there were no empty seats, so we just came home.

Just chillin' in his bouncy seat.

These were taken yesterday.

So sleepy.

~NBICU~

Such a sweetheart! He was such a good baby, even though it seemed like someone was always picking on him.

Chillin' under his billi lights, and blanket, with THREE IV's in.

I said that the ICU story would come later, so here it is, we'll see what I can remember. Asher spent two days short of three weeks in the NICU. So after waiting the three hours after delivering him we finally got to go the NBICU to see him. He was wearing oxygen and had some pretty big bruises all over his face from the forceps. He looked just like Jason's newborn picture.  We only stayed for a little while because I was getting light headed. So I went back to my room, which was in the lower north 40, and laid down for a while. While Jason took my mom to meet Asher. That night Jason's parents arrived and stayed until Sunday. Saturday my brother and sister-in-law, Jaden and Julie came down to see him and stayed until Sunday. And my dad finally got to come and Sunday, and him and my mom went home Monday. My brother and sister-in-law Krey and Brandi came Friday to see him, and a few other times during our stay. Jason's friend Jake and his wife Amy also came to see  us one night, and even took us out to dinner. It was great to be able to have so much family there at different times even though we were so far away. The entire time in the NICU is kind of a blur. We moved to different rooms, and different spots in the same room a lot, I think a total of about 7 times. During his stay Asher had jaundice, and was under three different lights as well as laying on the Billi-blanket. He also had many IV's and even had three in at the same  time at one point. One in each hand and one in his head. It was after that, that they decided  to put in his PICC line on Monday (a sort of IV that has a really long cannula that goes in your upper arm and the end of the catheter is right outside the heart.) The PICC line worked much better and he didn't have to have another IV placed his entire stay! He received most of his nutrients through his IV for almost the first week, until they put down his NG tube (a tube that goes through the nose and into the stomach to deliver nutrients), then they started slowly giving him his food through that until that is where he was getting all his food from (the little stinker wouldn't eat. Of course it could have something to do with the fact that he was basically starve for the first two days of his life, because they weren't sure if he was going to need  surgery, and didn't want him to have eaten in case he did. After he was finally getting all of his food through his NG, and his antibiotic was done (I think it was the Saturday after he was born) they were able to take out his PICC line. It was so nice to have one less cord to worry about pulling. He was also taken off his O2 (oxygen) for a while, but ended up having to have it put back on. He did this for a while before they finally just left it on. Jason (and I) decided that he was going to go back to work the week of the 31st through the 4 so that he would still be able to take some time off when Asher got home. So his parents brought down my mom on Sunday, and took Jason back that same day. It was EXTREMELY hard on me, and was the closest that I have EVER see Jason to crying. He had a really hard time leaving his baby in ICU while he was three hours away. That night Mom and I stayed in one of the hospital rooms that they can reserve for parents (Jason and I had stayed in the same room the night before). It was his nurse Yvonne's idea to try and see if we could get him better at eating, since he seem more awake at night. But of course he slept really well both nights so it didn't work so great. Jason's "week" gone didn't last too long since I kept calling him crying, and Wednesday night after he got off work he headed back down. I felt bad that I couldn't last the whole week but I was just so glad to have him back (we had only spent ONE night apart in four years before this). Me and Asher both needed him. While Jason was gone, I had them pull Asher's NG tube, to see if he could get enough from me, that he didn't need it anymore. NOT the case. He ended up losing a bunch of weight, and was below his birth weight again. I felt so bad, and even worse that they then had to place another NG tube the next day. Asher cried FOREVER after they place the first one, and his nose kept bleeding for days afterwords. So when I was pumping Jason told them to hurry and put it in, since I had such a hard time the first time. It was a sweet gesture, especially since I blamed myself for it having to be done. (if I wouldn't have had them pull it, then he wouldn't have had to have another put in). Unfortunately, Asher began SCREAMING when they tried to place it and since I was only a few feet away, I heard him and immediately knew it was him. I stopped pumping and ran to my baby. I held him close while he cried, and blamed myself for his pain. When he had calmed down, I went to rinse my bottles, and they got another nurse, who was really good at placing them to come and put his back in. They sucked out his nose first this time and got a huge booger, which is why they couldn't get it in the first time, and it went in no problems. He didn't even let out a peep. I couldn't be in there, so Jason stood by his side while they placed it. The only good to come was that this time they put in a smaller tube which Asher seemed to handle a lot better. He was always gagging on the old one. That Friday night when he ate, they didn't have to give him any through his tube, and never had to again. He got everything PO (by mouth) from then on. We were usually there all day, and at night they would give him a bottle from what I had pumped.  That Sunday we came home for Jason'. birthday.  It was one of the hardest thing I've had to do, but the break was much needed, and I got to see my dogs, which was also MUCH needed. We went back on Monday, and they said that they were going to do another echo on Tuesday to see if he could come home. He had to have improved in order to come home. So we waited all day Tuesday, and they finally came late afternoon, (they were playing catch up from the holiday the day before). Wednesday the ninth ( Our anniversary!) we called first thing when we got up to see if they had the results back yet, they didn't but told us they should soon, so we packed everything up at our room in the Ronald McDonald House, just in case we got to go home. We went to the hospital and............ still nothing. They still didn't have the results back yet. So we waited and waited and waited. Finally we told them that we had to let RMH know by noon if we were staying another night. So they told us to go check out, because they were pretty sure we could go. So we checked out, ate lunch, and went back, and they told us we could start packing up his stuff. We packed and feed him one more time for the road. The people with his home oxygen tank and monitor had come the day before to give us what we needed for the ride home since he was going home on O2. So we feed him, get him all plugged into his O2 tank and monitor and............................................. the monitor doesn't work. It was suppose to have been charging all night, but as soon as you unplug it, it shuts down. At this point I'm thinking that we will NEVER get to go home. So we had to wait for about 45 minutes for the guy to come back to the hospital and give us a new monitor. Then we finally, GOT TO GO HOME!!!!!!!!!!!! The ride took FOREVER especially since we were trying to leave Salt Lake right at 5:00pm, and we had to keep stopping to feed Asher, (our plan of feeding RIGHT before we left didn't work out so well) but we finally made it home at 9:00pm. (the monitor still ended up dying right before Poky) but we got home, and our puppies were already there! Thanks to both of our parents for all of the support, and for taking turns watching our dogs over the three weeks we were gone. Also thank you Julie for cleaning my very messy house, and to Krey and Dad for mowing our jungle! Our families are  the greatest! It's good to be home with our sweet baby.

Four Years!

So since the last few posts have had no pictures this one is going to be mostly pictures. Our wedding anniversary was Wednesday the 9th (the day we got to bring Asher home!). So we didn't really do anything because we were either at the hospital or traveling, all day but I had to say Happy Anniversary Babe! I would not have traded the last four years for anything!

Four wonderful years, one beautiful baby boy later, and I wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING!

Happy Birthday Jason

Last Sunday for Jason's Birthday we came home for the day. We actually left Asher at 11:00pm and got home at around 2:00am. Jason's parent's had brought down the dogs so they were here when we got home. I missed my dogs A LOT. We slept in and went to sacrament meeting. Then Jason's parents and little sister Ally brought down lunch. It was SO good. (Granted we have been eating fast food for two weeks, so I think anything not fast food would have been good, but this was REALLY good!) Then we went out to our niece Charlee's Birthday party ( her birthday is the day after Jason's). We got to see lots of family, and even got to see my cousin's two boys who are going to college at BYU-I this semester. Then we came home and relaxed to with dogs for the rest of the evening. Then we headed back down Monday morning. It was not easy leaving my baby boy, but the trip home was much needed. I was very sick of Utah, it was a nice break for Jason's birthday. I will say that I would not have been able to leave if Asher had not had the night nurse that he had. She was one that he had had the weekend before. She was such a good nurse and really went above and beyond what most of the nurses there did. I'm not saying they were bad nurses, they just did their job and that was it. Yvonne really went the extra mile, and I will always be extremely grateful to her for that. But I have gotten way off suject. I want to tell Jason that he is the BEST dad to Asher and BEST husband in whole wide world. I love you so much and don't know what I would do without you! Happy 26th!

Birth Story

Well since more and more time is passing and I don't want to forget, I guess I will post about what happened when Asher was born, and since my mom can't find her camera cord (I will have to go out sometime and help her look) this is going to be a LONG post, with NO pictures. Just a warning! On Thursday the 20 I had my regular doctor appointment. They did a non-stress test to make sure he was looking OK, which he was, did the other stuff (measure me, listen to his heart beat, etc), and measured my amniotic fluid. Everything looked great so they made an appointment for a week and I was done. I left there and did some shopping for about an hour and a half/two hours, then went home. I spent the rest of the day just relaxing and paying bills. Then about 6:30 I called Jason to see if his class had left yet (I was going to go to his work and look to see if I had left our camera there from the shower that his class had given him), then I went to the bathroom (graphic I know but an important part of the story). When I stood up I felt a little wet, I thought it was weird and sat back down for a few seconds then tried again. More wet. While I was doing this Jason called me back, so I finally go get my phone and start to call him back when I start feeling very wet. When he answered I told him, "I think my water might have broken." he say "Well that's great." and told me to call my mom to see for sure. My mom of course told me to call my doctor. The doctor on call told me I might have and when I told him I was supposed to deliver in Utah told me to go straight to the hospital. So I called Jason back and told him we needed to go to the hospital, it seemed like it took him FOREVER to get home, (even though it only takes him about 3 min to home from work). He got here and we immediately headed for the hospital. I didn't even say goodbye to my puppies because I thought for sure that they were just going to send me home. As I was speed walking to the labor and delivery, and I'm leaking down my legs, Jason asks me how come I didn't walk this fast the last eight months. I told him I hadn't been this motivated. We got taken back to a room and got checked in. They were going to run a test to make sure it was amniotic fluid but there was so much they were sure what it was. So then they try to call my regular doctor. She isn't on call that night. They try to call the doctor in Utah who is supposed to be delivering. He isn't on call. So they get the two doctors who are on call and through Dr. Belfort, who is in Utah, kind of get caught up on what is going on with Asher and why we are delivering in Utah. So the doctor at EIRMC comes in and tells me that I'm going for a little ride in a helicopter, because they don't want to take a chance of delivering him there. So they sent Jason home to start packing and so he could start the long drive since there wasn't enough room for him on the helicopter, and got me ready for the ride. They actually gave me a shot to stop my contractions since they were only 3 min apart and they didn't want me to deliver in the helicopter. We got in the helicopter and left IF at about 9:30pm. The ride was pretty uneventful and since it was so late you couldn't see anything so it didn't really feel like you were even moving, but the one guy in the back let me look through his night vision goggles for a little while which was cool. We arrived at U of U at about 11:00pm and as we were trying to find the Labor and Delivery ( the people there made the two who rode down with me try to find where to take me. They had never been in the hospital before. Also the pilot had never flown or been there either, but we made it safe and sound!) we went past the waiting room and my brother Krey and his family were there! Apparently my mom had called them so there would be someone there when I got there so I wasn't all alone. So we just hung out until Jason and my mom got there at about 1:00am, then Krey and Brandi took their kids home to go to bed. They also had to start me on Pictocin because the shot worked too well and I wasn't starting to contract enough again. The rest of the night consisted of them turning me down because Asher's heart rate was dropping too low during contractions and then turning me back up after a half and hour of rest. At some point I did get an epidural which worked really well for like an hour. Then they made me lay on my right side because Asher did better, then my left side started un-numbing. So I told my nurse and after what seemed like forever they finally sent someone in to give a bolus, it worked everywhere except for the top of my thigh and an area on the right side of my stomach. They tried two or three more times but they could never get those spots covered. The rest isn't extremely clear because of the mixture of pain and Benadryl that they gave me for the itching. I do know that I bawled through the entire delivery and Jason's favorite part was when they asked if I was crying because of the pain or if I was scared. I told them I didn't know. I think it was both. They ended up using the forceps because his heart rate was dropping too low and I was on oxygen for Asher's sake. After he was born they held him up to show us, cut the cord, and then handed him through the window in our room to a nurse on the other side in the NICU. We didn't get to see him again until THREE HOURS later. They immediately did an echo of heart and some other precautions, and I had to wait 40 min while they stitched me up but it was all worth it when we actually got to hold him. He looked, and still does, just like Jason. I have to say before I finish with this extremely long post, that Jason was amazing. He was very supportive and I know that there is no way I could have done it without him. One of my biggest fears during this whole ordeal was that he wasn't going to make there in time and I would have to do it alone. I am extremely grateful that this was not the case. Well that is the birth story, the NBICU story is a whole 'nother matter and probably twice as long. So I will spare you for now. I will say that he was there for 19 days and trust me it seems like A LOT longer!

Not the best picture of him, it was taken with Jason's phone, but at least it's a picture!

We're HOME!!!

We are back in the good old state of Idaho, finally. We actually got back on Wednesday night at like 9:30pm, but I have been too busy and tired to blog about anything and let me tell you I am WAY behind, because since Asher was born Jason has had his birthday and we also had our anniversary. But I will post about them later. I still do not have any pictures to put on here because we borrowed my mom's camera since I still have not found ours, and I don't have the cord to put the pictures onto the computer. So hopefully I will get it soon and will post lots and lots of pictures of my sweet baby boy. It feels so good to be home, I was so homesick and missed my puppies a lot, and it is just nice to be able to relax in our own home, and do things on our schedule, not the hospital's. Well that is all I'm going to post for now, just thought I would let those of you who didn't know that we are home safe and sound. Hopefully I will be able to pictures on here soon!
